Patrick de Kepper

This three-day workshop, organised in honour of Jacques Boissonade and Patrick De Kepper, will intently focus on presenting envisioned trends and emerging perspectives in this most lively area of research. Jacques Boissonade and Patrick De Kepper have both joined in 1973 the group of non-linear chemical dynamics newly founded by Pr. A. Pacault at the Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal, a laboratory of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) located on the Bordeaux University campus.

Except for short periods, they have continued all their career in this laboratory and kept up a strong scientific collaboration in the study of oscillating reactions, nonequilibrium reaction-diffusion patterns, and, more recently, chemomechanics : Whereas J. Boissonade developed theoretical concepts and numerical simulations based on nonlinear dynamics, P. De Kepper devoted himself to the chemical and the experimental aspects, developing for this purpose a number of original open reactors and devices.

High-profile speakers have been called for to illustrate the deep cross-disciplinarity of the field and will be delivering over 20 plenary talks on topics ranging from chemistry to mathematics, non-linear physics and biology-related problems :

Nice Days of Waves in Complex Media 2010

This year, the workshop will be dedicated to Random Lasers. This new domain of laser physics has opened interesting avenues in both theoretical and experimental investigations of random active media. Since the seminal work of Lethokov in the sixties, random lasing has been observed and studied in many scattering systems from suspensions in dye solutions to semiconductor powders, from random fibers to biological tissues. Important theoretical questions have been raised during these last decade, as to the nature of the lasing modes in these mirrorless lasers. New directions have been recently initiated, for instance random lasing in cold atomic gases. Beyond the fundamental aspects, possible important applications start to emerge. Most of these developments both experimentally and theoretically, will be covered during this conference. Keeping close to the spirit of this workshop, each presentation will be followed by a substantial amount of time dedicated to discussions.

This conference is devoted to fostering the interaction between the SIAM Activity Groups in Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) and in Dynamical Systems and Applications (DS) with the Catalan and Spanish mathematical societies and RSME, SCM, and SEMA and the European applied mathematical community in general. The conference will put special emphasis in stimulating new promising research lines in PDEs and DS, encouraging bridges between academia and industry. Modelling, theoretical analysis, numerical analysis and simulation are the methodological core of these fields. Minisymposia and contributions in all these strategies are welcome, particularly those who use them in a unifying way.

The main goal of this second International Workshop is to develop the mutual interaction between specialists from biology, nonlinear dynamics, physics and mathematics.

More and more works show that biological systems have non linear dynamics, so they may have also chaotic behavior and strange attractors. In neural systems new observations show that chaos appears both on the level of one neuron and on the level of large networks. In population dynamics, chaos has been observed in experimental cultures and seems to be important in the diffusion of transmitted diseases in social networks. It becomes obvious that there is a challenging demand for studying and modeling complex dynamics of biological systems in order to describe various modes and activities. In particular, there is a need to understand the interplay between non linearity and stochasticity of biological processes.

Concepts, modèles, analyses et simulations

Thématique

Les réseaux d'interaction sont des objets d'études conceptuels permettant de représenter la complexité des systèmes que l'on rencontre fréquemment dans la nature et les sociétés humaines. Ces systèmes et ces réseaux sont aujourd'hui au cœur des observations et du développement scientifique de nombreuses disciplines aussi variées que la biologie, la physique, la santé, les sciences humaines et sociales.

Cette école thématique a pour objectif de poser le problème de la modélisation dans ces disciplines grâce à ces outils conceptuels, en les confrontant aux besoins des utilisateurs de modèles, issus de ces disciplines variées. Des exposés généraux seront proposés sur les enjeux, les méthodes et les modèles dans différents cas d'applications (neuroscience, géographie, biologie, sociétés, télécommunications et intelligence ambiante). Des ateliers pratiques seront mis en place et conduiront à des mises en œuvre basées sur la bibliothèque GraphStream.

Des approches différenciées de ces ateliers pratiques seront proposées afin de permettre à des praticiens ou à des non praticiens de l'informatique de pouvoir tirer profit de leur intérêt pour ce type de modèles dans leur propres objets d'études et dans leur approche disciplinaire. Ces approches différentiées permettront aux participants soit de manipuler des modèles pré-construits, soit de bénéficier d'une formation accélérée à Java dans le but d'utiliser Graphstream, soit de développer des modèles et des simulations dans les applications pré-citées, soit d'apporter ses propres objets d'études afin de travailler sur une possible mise en modélisation avec Graphstream.

La complémentarité entre thématiciens et modélisateurs permet de contribuer à une démarche pratique allant de la construction de modèles à l'implémentation de simulations, en passant par leur analyse.
